RCIA ministers to those seeking to
begin or complete Christian Initiation. The ministry is a 12-month
process, but with adequate team support, scheduling of vacations and
other breaks are possible. There are two types of team members:
sponsors and catechists. Sponsors mentor those seeking
initiation, and provide companionship and support to the candidate.
Potential sponsors should possess good listening skills and a
willingness to share. Limited training in specific needs is provided
with written aids that are also available. Commitment is flexible, but
normally continues through the initiation of a candidate [about a
year] but often the friendship that develops continues indefinitely.
Catechists lead small group discussions on the Sunday Scriptures
at a dismissal from Mass and/or direct evening session discussions on
aspects of Catholic faith. Potential catechists should possess an
ability to lead discussions and draw out participants. Written
materials and suggested discussion outlines are available to
supplement the catechists' own knowledge and experience of faith.
Training and assistance are available from the coordinator,
Archdiocesan Office of the Catechumenate, and the national
organization. Commitment is usually a year. Session leadership
frequency is dependent upon the number of catechists.
